Uss Colorado Submarine Association

USS Colorado (SSN 788)

USS Colorado is the 15th Virginia class submarine. Construction started in March 2012 at Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, Connecticut and she was delivered to the Navy on September 21, 2017. She was Commissioned at Naval Submarine Base in Groton on March 17, 2018. Her Ship's Sponsor is Ms. Annie Mabus. She is the fourth ship to bear the name Colorado.


OUR MISSION

The Association is organized to maintain a proud and active relationship between the citizens of Colorado and the crew and families of USS Colorado (SSN 788), specifically to:

  • Support the morale, well-being and recreation of the crew and their families.
  • Encourage, advocate, and generate statewide support for the crew of USS Colorado throughout the life of the submarine and to educate the citizens of Colorado about their namesake submarine.
  • Educate the crew about the beauty of Colorado and the heritage of previous vessels commissioned as USS Colorado.
  • Raise funds and finance appropriate events and activities associated with these objectives.

    The Rocky Mountain Base of the US Submarine Veterans held their annual memorial ceremony at the USS Grayling (SS 209) Memorial at Sloan’s Lake.  Each state has a memorial to one of the submarines lost during WWII.  Each year they “Toll the Boats” for submariners lost at sea.

    USS Colorado Submarine Association Board Member Captain John J. Mackin USN (Ret.) was  keynote speaker at the event in which he paid tribute to the lost submariners of Grayling as well as all lost submarines  He also recognized current sailors of USS Colorado.

    September 2nd celebrates the official V-J Day, the date on which the formal signing of the Japanese instrument of surrender took place aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.  Moored next to MISSOURI was the USS Colorado (BB45), who witnessed the event. COLORADO arrived in Tokyo Bay on August 27th and departed for the United States on September 20th.

    Frank Wayne Kizer, 96, of Perrysville IN, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Thursday, August 12, 2021. He was born June 17, 1925, near Eugene IN, the son of Frank M. and Florence Pritchard Kizer, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his siblings Clarence, Ed, Mildred, Mabel, Margaret, andSusie. His sister Madge, who celebrated her 100th birthday in July, and his sister Virginia both survive. 

    Wayne joined the Navy at seventeen and served from 1943 - 1946 on the USS Colorado battleship in the South Pacific during World War II.  He married Betty C. Bracewell on October 4, 1946. They were married for 72 years when she passed away in April 2019. They lived in Danville IL for several years prior to moving to their farm near Perrysville IN in 1960. He was co-owner of Kizer Construction in Danville IL until retirement.  

    Wayne and Betty raised 6 children, Steve of New Castle IN, Susie (Gary) Francour of Kodak TN, Sandy (Larry) Rollins of Perrysville IN, Joe of Westville IL, Sharon Godsil of Arvada CO and Sara (John) Wegman of Cayuga IN. He loved being a grandfather to their 20 grandchildren, their great grandchildren, as well as their great-great grandchildren. Wayne also loved his farm, raising farm animals, and he was a hard worker. He was always willing to help someone out.  He was a member of the Carpenter’s Union, Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Perrysville Methodist Church and Lion’s Club. During the years of Perrysville Fun Days, he would make the breakfast each year.

    The USS Colorado FRG Single Sailor and Morale Deployment box projects were a huge success!  We received a note of gratitude from the FRG for our support of their Amazon wish lists.  Thank you to all of the USS Colorado members and supporters who contributed to the projects.  YOU make a difference.

    Chief of the Boat, ETRCM (SS) Chip Alger will be swapping positions with CSSCS(SS) Mark Shipley, COB on PCU Iowa (future SSN797) which is under construction on at Electric Boat. The changeover should occur by mid-March. The Command plans to do a Zoom meeting with the CO, XO and introduce the new COB to Association Members in the near future.

    Commander Steve Col, Commissioning XO on COLORADO, has recently relieved as Commanding Officer of USS Rhode Island (SSBN 740)(Blue) at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia. Steve participated in several crew visits to our state during the construction period. We wish him all the best for his Command Tour.
